30 Stocks of the Singapore Straits Times Index 2011

Here are the 30 Component Stocks of the Singapore Straits Times Index 2011.
City Developments
Fraser and Neave
Keppel Corp

Singapore Airlines
Singapore Press Holdings
United Overseas Bank
Oversea-Chinese Banking
DBS Group Holdings
SembCorp Industries
Jardine Cycle & Carriage

Singapore Technologies Engineering

Golden Agri-Resources
Sia Engineering
SMRT Corp
Wilmar International Limited
Singapore Exchange
Noble Group
ComfortDelgro Corp
Genting Singapore
CapitaMall Trust
StarHub
Olam International

Compared to the FTSE Bursa Malaysia CI, the banks consists just 3 which is all of the local banks. And seem more balance with several transport firms (SIA of course, Comfort, SMRT, Neptune) and commodities (Olam, Noble) plantations (Wilmar, Golden Agri).

Two interesting component stocks at least to me, is Jardine Matheson and Jardine Strategic.

So the question is : how do we make a stock index, or should we be making and mimicking the well-known STI index?

Every wise investor should have a strategy to buy and hold several of the stocks above, and ability to move sideways within a sector. Say for instance, now that Wilmar seems to have hit several highs and questionable situation with their new divergence into property development (from pure palm oil sector), a strategic investor that wishes for growth and strength in palm oil sector can still remain invested by selling their Wilmar shares, and buying instead Golden Agri.

Likewise with telco. One must have the capacity for making shifts within the sector. Sell Singtel, buy Starhub if the direction to expand overseas is taking a slower growth now after years of double digit growth in Australia and Indonesia.

Will write more on each component stock in separate articles.

Unbeatable stock picks still hold

The common question in investment is what are the safest unbeatable stocks pick please?

If you bought Genting Singapore at 2.00 recently (see previous articles), you would have gained roughly 14 cents or 7% return in a week.

The other unbeatable stock - Singtel was trading at close to $3.00.

Buying in dips - AirAsia Genting Singapore Kossan Scomi KNM

Today's dips could be a chance to buy-and-accumulate before more funds are released and the imminent QE2 money coming into Malaysia and Singapore markets. Both these markets attained 20% gains this year compared to over 40% for Thailand and Indonesia. Therefore it is safe to suggest foreign funds will have a higher likelihood to invest in equities in Malaysia and Singapore.

Some choice picks:
Singapore - Genting Singapore (casino and integrated resort), China Oilfield, China Aviation Oil, (start to accumulate oil and gas related stocks), Golden Agri (palm oil), Ezra (oil and gas), SATS, SMRT (just given out dividend and prices pressed down).
Malaysia - AirAsia (low cost carrier), Kossan, Hartalega, Supermax (rubber industry, rubber gloves), Scomi, KNM (industrial engineering) both below 50 sens.

Peter Lim A Wilmar and Golden Agri story

Most of you would have known this story - Peter Lim made his fortune investing in Wilmar many many years ago. Back then he invested when the company was at a low price, then now the price is over the moon. One factor was palm oil demand and prices went up through the years.

Wilmar along with Golden Agri, are listed in Singapore. While all their palm oil producing plantations are located in Indonesia. They are both the largest and second largest palm oil producers.

So now, if we are presented the scenario that Peter Lim had many years ago, when Wilmar was affordable. What would you do? With the knowledge that palm oil is heading upwards. And there is this second largest palm oil company being offered at a reasonably low price?

When I first invested in AirAsia, the similar situation hit. This airline is smashing records, over 75 destinations with over 183 routes, all over Asean and China and India, Australia. Recently it had gone from average of 1.50 RM, to over 2.50 RM in 4 months.

So I wonder if the day comes when Golden Agri had moved from 60 cents, to $1.00, to $5.00. What is the target price of Golden Agri? What was the target price of Wilmar? And that "was" was some time ago.

Similarly, what was the target price of Genting Singapore? Remember some powerful research house, or investment group were giving Genting Singapore $1.20 target price. 90 cents target price because of a Rights Issue. $1.25 target price and fear of estimating the gains. Fast forward to today, apparently the target priced has been revised upwards, conveniently.

My wish was to find such a Wilmar. And I had found it several times and several times too were swayed by wrong information, too much information, lack of confidence and believe in myself. So if you have found yours, believe in yourself and hopefully one day, you will know how Mr Peter Lim felt.

"When you first look at kungfu, it appears to be so easy.
When you are training in kungfu, it is very difficult.
When you have mastered kungfu, it appears to be so easy."

This was the legendary kungfu exponent Bruce Lee's philosophy about mastery. Which level of investment mastery are you at?

Effective tax 12 percent for Genting Singapore compared to over 39 percent in Macau

Singapore, with its two mega casinos, is unlikely to overtake Macau but may steal some "high-rollers" from China as operators shift premium business to the city-state where they face an effective tax rate of 12 per cent compared with about 39 per cent in the Chinese territory.

What this could translate is greater operating profit.
Say if there was a revenue of $1bil, after approximate after-tax profit would be 88% x 1bil = 880mil
While casinos operating in Macau will be left with just 61% x 1bil = 610mil

That 200mil saved could be used in many ways. Repaying the loan. Paying the salaries of the ten thousand employees, or a bonus to employee. Based on that number each average employee could get $1667 as a year end bonus. Why not?!

Learning from history Genting Berhad 2 year performance

The World Financial Crisis did rattle many stocks and Genting Berhad, mother stock of Genting Singapore, did experience a downturn during that period and also surprisingly another short period durng April 2009 when it was down to only MYR3.20. That translate to about SGD$1.42.

Within two years, Genting Berhad now is trading over MYR10.00 (SGD4.44) or a tremendous gain of 312%

Should this be an indicator of the trend that Genting Singapore could be heading? There are many analysis and predictions for the expected Target Price of Genting Singapore. So this take here is based on not only trend of the mother stock but also plain fundamentals.

Genting Berhad in the old days took 3 years to build the access road up to the mountain to start the building of the resort, hotel and casino. It was estimated to take over 10 years. Very impressive but still no revenue for those 3 years and another few years more to complete the buildings.

Now fast forward to Genting Singapore. The whole resort(apart from a few other sections) is completed and running and making profit in 3 years. And at current revenue estimates, the whole cost of the resort could be paid off in 3-5 years.

One of my earlier articles projected $2.50. My other article suggested about $4.00. So with this article, it is quite solid and possible the price could be in the range of  $2.50 to $4.00 in 2 years.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Foxwoods the biggest casino in USA was funded by Genting

Foxwoods is the biggest casino in USA and is operated by the Mashantucket Pequot tribe funded by Genting in 1992.

From harvesting lettuce and maple syrup, we have now become the most profitable casino in the world. Before Lim, we only knew poverty. It was with his faith and trust that we are what we are now.
- Michael Thomas, chairman of the Native American Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
Explorer's Guide Connecticut (Seventh Edition) (Explorer's Complete)Lonely Planet 1000 Ultimate Experiences (General Reference)Lonely Planet USA (Country Travel Guide)

The late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong's legacy does not only live on in Genting, but halfway round the world in the Native American tribe of the Mashantucket Pequot.

Unknown to most Malaysians, in 1991 the late Goh Tong helped the tribe that was struggling to grow cabbage by investing in their idea of building a casino, the Foxwoods Resort & Casino, which has now become the largest casino in the world. The chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, a sovereign nation within the US located in the state of Connecticut, Michael Thomas said the tribe owed a great deal to Lim for his vision and his confidence in them.

The tribe had approached 23 lending institutions who all turned them down for funding because they were afraid the loan would not be repaid.

A very hands on person, Lim Goh Tong travelled to meet the tribe and see for himself what was this Native American tribe was about and what their ancient values were. And within 48 hours, he agreed to give his support in the form of a US$60mil (RM200mil) investment. To show the magnitude of this seed funding, the revenue for the US government is close to US$2.7bil today from the casino operations of Foxwoods.

During his passing, the tribe gave all due respect in traditional manner. Thomas said this included all buildings in the nation flying their flag at half-mast for a week, while a sacred stone called Wampum which is sourced from a clam called the Quohog would be given to the family. It was important for the world to know that it was the faith Goh Tong had in them that allowed them to succeed beyond their wildest dreams.

Therefore if you have ethics, values, family values, and finally believe, things can change for the better.

Low tax for Genting Singapore means best results for investors

By 2012, Morgan Stanley expects the Singapore casino market will hit 6-10 billion in revenue, basing on the time taken by Macau to hit that same target. While it is simple to equate Macau to have a backyard of a billion China tourists, the fact is irrelevant. Perhaps some China tourists prefer to go "overseas" rather than Macau. And perhaps Singapore as a stop-point and central destination, will get better spillover effects - from Australia, from Europe, from all over South East Asia, all the flight paths just intersect there conveniently. And also family - family is essential and the Universal Studios theme park at Genting Singapore will certainly shine.

So now back to insider information, as from my previous write-up of All Things Genting - here is a short word with a very powerful financial effect - tax.

Good news is the tax regime for the casinos in Singapore is about 5% to 15%. Incredibly low. Plus wages are low too. The cost of building and maintenance is much lower compared to say an Australian Casino. And even if Macau had cheap labour, the tax regime on casinos is a high of over 39%. Elsewhere in the world too, casino operations are seen as cash-cows that are rightfully taxed to the max. But in Singapore apparently they see the benefits of creating jobs and boosting tourism and hotel industry as a better measure of successfully milking the cash cow - so to speak.

The competition Las Vegas Sands has just ramped up. But how big a competition is it against each other? I doubt so. Casinos are casinos. Visitors do not visit one because it is "cheaper" or prettier. Well they may do if one casino is offering more winnings on the roulette table like 39 to 1 instead of 36 to 1! Competing against the government. 2-0 score - not only government is supportive, even the tax regime is helpful. Competing against Macau. Target market is very much different. Macau could be just for China tourists and hence very China oriented. While in Singapore, it is a multi-cultural experience. There are tons of cheap Indian food, international flavour and multi-level Chinese dialect food.

So lastly, a quick look at some charts. Here you can see how the stocks stack up in their respective market. No surprise that Genting is moving upwards. While a look at Las Vegas Sands is rather astonishing. From a high of over $100 to current levels of $30.

A good point to note is that in the NYSE or US stocks in general, the trading lot is 100 units. While Genting Singapore is trading at 1000 unit lots. Therefore, currently LVS is trading at say USD3.00 or about SGD4.00. Comments, suggestions, welcome!

Genting Plantations double up in a year

There has been too much chatter regarding Genting Malaysia and Genting Singapore and everything related to casino and Integrated Resorts. For a change, let us still look at Genting but another sector that they excel in. Here's a chart of how Genting Plantations performed for the past 5 years.

Amazing or not, the stock price of Genting Plantations has doubled from a low of 3.00 RM to almost 8.00 RM in a year plus. The price did drop from the all time high of 9.00 RM to 3.00 RM. Percentage wise that is 66% down. Compared relatively to the current gains of 260%.

And this not happened to Genting Plantations. Quite a number of stocks in Singapore and Malaysia that I am aware of and or investing in, had doubled up. The downturn caused those stocks to diminish to less than half their all time high, and that only lasted for a year or so. Then it gained back and went even higher. This peculiar behaviour is something to think about. In a positive way, that should be a clue as to when is the best time to re-invest. At the downturn. Which happens and lasts not too many months or years. And the gains are returned within a year or two.

Genting Malaysia rising in tandem with Genting Singapore

Genting Malaysia has been rising in tandem with Genting Singapore. From a long average range trading of $2.70 to $2.85 for over 1 year, now it has risen to over $3.40. Price was on an automated computerised buy-in high of $3.60 and went down slightly after the dividend (XD). And now on a equal climb with Genting Singapore.

Today, I am at Genting Highlands Resorts. Staying in the Highland Hotels, Level 9 of the Premier section. The interior has been upgraded once again. Very clean facilities. Very super fast lifts / elevator to shuttle impatient punters out of their hotel rooms into the casino tables. Staff have high morale. Salary here is much higher than elsewhere in Malaysia. Staff have their own residences and staff meal coupons. You have no place to "waste" your money. Just work, get paid, save, no worries about place to stay, rent, nor food. Happy employees means productive and dedicated employees. Policemen everywhere. They seem so much more professional and happier to give a smile than elsewhere too. Security is a top. The dining courts, restaurants, Maxims, Good Friends Restaurant, McDonalds, Marry Brown, Hainan Kitchen, are all packed with consumers. The slot machines ate 100 RM and then 50 RM. Then another 100 RM.

There are competitions and lucky draw for a BMW car (top prize) in celebration of 45th Anniversary of Genting Highlands. Veteran punters are approached by courteous staff, and being offered a free two nights stay at the hotel for the next trip that must be used within 2 months period (bar peak period). Just by checking your Genting Card and Genting Points accumulated for the day. On average, I think you can earn 1 Genting Point for "using" 50 RM for a span of 30 minutes or so. Yes there's another promotion! If you obtained 3 GP (Genting Points) within a day, you get a FREE COMBO MEAL coupon at 4-5 of the participating restaurants - like Fortune Corner, Hainan, and a few others. PLUS you stand a chance to win the car.

Cross marketing, and market segmentation is at its best. Veterans, retired citizens, who have slogged for years working and now have freedom of travel time (weekdays, non peak, non public holiday) are more often than not being offered the free room special. In proviso, you have to book it within a designated time frame. A trip to Genting Highlands for 2 person will consists of travelling expenses, meals, and casino budget. Say a low casino budget of 100 RM per day. You will be spending 2 days or 1 night, so 200 RM budget. Food is pricy at average of 20 RM per meal. 200 + 80 = 300 RM. For a very low budget person. And usually people travel as a team, a couple, old friends, so 2 person minimum. That's 600 RM into the Revenue of Genting Malaysia's balance sheet. You can bet that "normal and regular punters" will have a bigger casino budget, say 200 RM to 500 RM per day.

So that free hotel stay, means another 600-1000 RM coming in. On non-peak periods. My parents have 400-500 Genting Points. Based on my 50 RM "usage" theory, they have spent 50 RM x 400 = 20 000 RM over a course of 5 years. Average of 4000 RM per year. So yes, 1000 RM per trip. Multiply that with the veteran membership numbers (any Genting personnel can supply this figure or any actuarial estimate?) Basically the so called "non peak" period is covered solid. The bus companies too are subsidised by Genting Malaysia to have a "fair" fare for customers.

At the Galleria, a museum to showcase the roadmap of Genting's founder Lim Goh Tong - and vision of the place. 45 years ago. The startup phase was difficult. The road, literally The Long And Winding Road as sang by The Beatles. Perhaps his favourite song? Took 4 years to build the access road to the mountain top. Basically zero profit for building a road. So zero profit for 4 years. Then I look at the graph and charts, the first 10 years or so very slow. And then exponential growth. Then 97, then 2008. There are charts to show the stock value and nett profit. Compounded Average Growth Rate is a remarkable 20%. Therefore, perhaps you may want to think it is terms of a fixed deposit with 20% per annum interest rate. Some years would have had 30%, 40% growth. So think of say an average sum of $10 000 with 20% interest and keep it for 45 years. The answer: _____

So for those who thought they might have missed the boat buying Genting Singapore, Genting Malaysia is always here. The price converted to Singapore dollars is about 4.25 / 2.25 = $1.88 Singapore Dollars. Besides holding both stocks covers both economies or both market and part of diversification.

The clouds are coming again. It is cold. Weather up here is uncertain. It is raining now. One thing certain is your company's profit here. Yes your company - you are the shareholder, yes?

Genting Singapore target price $2.50

Recent correction and profit taking of Genting Singapore is somewhat a healthy sign. A great chance to step in. Tourist arrivals to Singapore has been steadily increasing. Once again proving that being the hub, a central stopping place for travellers, an excellent airport, MRT, and relatively fair prices for food and lodging, gives Singapore the edge to continually being at the back of the mind of vacation planners.

A typical example: a family of four from Germany wanting to visit Bali island - first they look at the airfares. And Singapore Airlines gives a good price (normally lower than Lufthansa, BA) plus a free stopover in Singapore. Why not? For years, Singapore Airlines along with the government cross-promotes and subsidies in one way or another, because eventually the country earns. But many other Asean countries with their flagship airlines such as Malaysia Airlines (MH) and Thai Airways (TG) will quote a "surcharge" for doing a stopover that is clearly acceptable! Therefore, travellers will bypass this chance of a stopover. Alas: The potential earnings for the taxi, transport, hotel, food, parks industry is lost.

Over 1.1 million visitors arrive in July - a 24% increase year-on-year. Imagine, in percentage wise, that is a quarter of the residents of Singapore. Imagine a quarter of another country - bringing disposable income aka tourist dollars? Malaysia's population - 24 million. A quarter is 6 million visitors. On average a tourist could be spending 100 dollars per day - of local currency, so say, 100 Singapore dollars, or 100 Ringgit for Malaysia. And with an average stay of 5 days. Every other nation is envious of such a high rate of tourist arrivals!

So with the Integrated Genting Singapore Resort, Singtel F1 Night Race, and year end holidays (more and more travellers!!), will trickle and tickle customers to the easily accessible casino. There are free buses. Or MRT. Or taxi. Just say 10 dollars to get there in 20-30 minutes. Hop on and hop off.

China tourists doubled to over 130 thousand. Traditionally: This is a group that has high propensity to consume, and gamble. Full Year 2010 revenue is expected to be close to 10 times of 2009. Essentially paying back the cost of the casino and resort in 2-3 years!

Genting Singapore consolidating while expect upwards flow

Genting Singapore consolidated to below $2.00 lately with profit taking kicking in. This is perhaps a good chance to buy into Genting Singapore before another expected upwards flow. Those who have followed and bought at $1.00 average and sold at $2.15 for a super 100% harvest, it is a good time to re-plant.

Among other recommendations, gaming and casino stocks have always been a strong survivor during good and tough times. Therefore other stock recommendations are for Berjaya Toto and Genting Malaysia. Toto going at $4.15 lately has been at this affordable level, with hefty dividends.

Genting Malaysia target price $4

With Genting Singapore on a turbo to over $2.10 Singapore Dollars, hot money has been flowing into two other Genting stocks namely Genting Malaysia (GENM) formerly Resorts World, and Genting Hong Kong (formerly Starcruises). This volatile week saw GENM rocking from $3.10 to $3.60 and back to $3.40.

This rocking is essentially great news for investors. GENM has been at $2.80 level for a year. Volatility is essentially a promising sign. A hive of activity means there are buyers and sellers and winners and losers, rather than a stagnant priced stock. A dividend is declared - therefore buying now is status CD (cum dividend).

If finally Genting Singapore is priced at an average of $2.00 SGD which is about $4.50 MYR. Could it be possible GENM will arrive at that level of $4.00 as a target price?

What is promising is the gaming business in UK that Genting Malaysia will possess and another gaming business in USA.

Another natural feature of Malaysian KLSE Bursa stocks compared to SGX stocks is the magnitude of price movement. Glove companies such as Top Glove goes up $2-$5. Even Genting Berhad itself went up $4. Therefore, the likelihood of hitting a higher note for GENM is there. Genting Singapore actually doubled up or rose 100%. Using that as another estimation from the stable level of $2.80 for GENM, the target price of a doubling up could arrive at $5.60 as a target price?

Genting Singapore - what I wrote on 22nd December 2009

Posted 22 December 2009 - 10:55 AM
The nature of uncertainty means there is apprehension to buy in until the resort is opened, and customers and cashiers are ringing the bling.

While the recent Dubai World situation keeps people back on alert of sudden fall, Genting is one stable growth company that is all geared for it's future in Singapore - the central place that links all in. And with clean clear cut laws and taxes, and virtually the lowest corruption in Asia, Genting is betting itself on itself here - instead of its flagship in Malaysia.

My very fair estimates are $1.35 that is 20 cents gain (17%) on current prices. Those who've bought way back in during my earlier recommendation, should hold on further again. If you've done the wave-riding technique, you might have sold at $1.20 last week, and could have bought back again today at $1.17 assuming 3 cent brokerage, you've virtually lock in on your previous 30% gains. Congrats!
